Maybe Mondays...

Welcome to this post! In it you will find all sorts of fascinating tidbits, because I want to fascinate and delight you, my beloved reader.

You might have been expecting a new chapter of Servant of the King, and your expectation is well-founded. It is indeed on Mondays that a new chapter is posted. In fact, a new chapter is also posted on Thursdays. Thus, you can expect a new chapter posted later tonight.

So to what, you are probably asking, do you owe this bonus post?

To the desire to discuss writing in my life right now. If you are a writer, like me, who desires to be a successful and publishing author, your experience might be very similar to mine. So let's commiserate, shall we?

I'd like to pose some questions and have you answer them in the comments of this post. For my part, I'll answer them here in this post.

Q1. Why do I desire to be a writer, work as a writer, or in other words, be a teller of stories? Not lies, because they contain truth; but stories.

A1. That's a freaking good question. There is no doubt that if I didn't have this burning desire in me, I would be a far more settled fellow.

In any case, I think my love of stories began with The Poky Little Puppy. I remember that was the book I loved best when I was six. I don't remember anyone ever reading it to me; but I read it plenty. I also read The Little Engine that Could. Even at that young age, I had an inkling of the solid quality of the first book and the inherent problem with the second. To this day, The Little Engine that Could bugs me and The Poky Little Puppy makes me grin.

Did I digress? Yes, I think so.

I love stories. Fantasy series like The Forgotten Realms, particularly R.A. Salvatore's and Ed Greenwood's work, really got me excited. I loved what I read of Dragonlance. There was also Walter Farley's The Black Stallion. I loved that book and devoured every book in the series. They changed my life in that I learned to love horses and I actually, I kid you not, learned to ride horses by reading them. The first time I got on a horse it felt like home.

I get a little emotional when I see how much my oldest boy loves that book. I see him identifying with Alec and... man... the power of story!

Stories have moved me for as long as I can remember. I love the worlds, the people, the magic, the action, the love stories, the fantastic elements. I think there was a stretch of nearly ten years in which I didn't read these books; those were my dark ages.

So I love these stories to the point that I decided I wanted to tell them. I wanted to move people. I still do. I want to transport people into the life and world of characters and take them along on an exciting, breathless, emotional ride. I want to shock, hurt and change my readers. I love it.

Q2. Is there a spot of vanity in my motivation to be a successful writer?

A2. Why yes, funny you should ask. I have seen the vanity in myself and recognize the motivation it gives me. I want attention, I want validation, I even want some near-worship.

But when I feel like the goal of success and validation is driving my writing, I have seen that my writing becomes a chore, not a joy. So I push back when it comes a'calling and I immerse myself in story again.

I won't deny I like to get a compliment now and again. One of my fondest dreams is to meet someone like Bob Salvatore or Stephen King and hear them tell me I'm a good writer. Actually, Dave Farland said that once, so that was mighty cool.

Q3. What about writing means the most to you?
A3. There are those moments when I've pushed through malaise, laziness, doubt and distraction and have gotten into the story. Those moments when I feel like I've been in my characters' heads and hearts and have told a story that means something because it speaks of and to the soul.

Recently though, I've had a new experience that has meant even more to me as a writer, particularly regarding my journey into the craft. As I work on Servant of the King, I have found myself hitting some points that I was not expecting. I have found the character and the world he inhabits simply lead him into these moments that are beyond what I had planned. So when I've hit some of these moments where I really don't know what happens next, I take a few minutes to write about the characters involved. I write about their motivations, their goals, their individual world, and their relationships. As I do that, man, it's exhilarating! What happens next become clear because it is simply what that person would do in that situation.

And as I follow these threads, things grow more complicated and the world becomes richer and the people become more real.

So these moments where I feel like I'm really delving into the craft-- they're tops right now. They're intrinsic validation.

Have you had any of these moments where you've felt yourself learning and mastering the craft?

Q4. Is writing a solitary activity?
A4. Yes. And no.
I do my best work when I am writing in a quiet place, with my headphones playing scene-appropriate music and also keeping any ambient noise away. I must be alone and completely undistracted when I want to really get work done.

Also, writing is solitary in that the people around me, and maybe other writers too, don't truly understand what it means to try to craft an excellent story-- especially a long one. It takes lots of time and work and is completely absorbing. It's mentally and emotionally taxing. I sometimes want to share the emotions I go through when I write, and I do that, but it's clear that those I talk to don't get it really.

But writing is also not solitary at all. I mean, I'm writing for an audience after all. And I am surrounded by people who love and support me. (And it's bloody about time I recognized that.) They want the best for me and many of them are actually reading my stuff!!! I apologize for the overuse of exclamation points.

Please forgive.

And there is no doubt that a good writing group that is regularly attended is beyond value.

Q5. What about your faith? Does it play a part in your work?
A5. Very much, especially today. For a lot of years, I tried to segment my life. I kept things in their world and didn't let things spill over. For example, I want to be successful as a writer-- meaning I want to be publishing regularly and have people love my work, because I will be writing good stuff. But I never allowed my Father in Heaven into that dream.

I've changed that tune significantly. When I sit down to write, I actually watch the video I have embedded on the right of this blog first. Every time. Then I say a prayer. Every time.

My writing has been much improved of late. I know it's because I am praying over my flocks and fields and that I have recognized that my dream is good-- and my writing is a good work. God wants me to be happy. This is one of the major sources of happiness for me.

As a final note, my life is not on hold until I start reaching goals of success as a writer. Not even close. I have a phenomenal family (Oh don't practice your alliteration on me...) and a good job. I love life. I love most every moment of life. I and my family are blessed. Writing is a part of life and I expect it to become a larger part of our life as I keep moving toward goals.

Sorry I haven't been around for three whole weeks! Where does the time go? The last time I posted here was on my 35th birthday!

Okay, so the first thing to say is that I had another aticle in LDSLiving's online magazine. Yes, I am angling to get into the print version, but this is okay for now. Here's the link:

By the way, this article has actually generated some buzz. The editor of the magazine has been forwarding responses to the piece and they're in general pretty great! I've never had that many in a day before, so that was a red letter day!

I have also put two new pieces on http://powersderived.blogspot.com. One is about S.909-- the new hate crimes legislation. The other is my commentary about FOCA. Both are good and informative-- as well as entertaining reads.

As for other writing, I'm finishing a project for my biggest client. I'm also looking to get on with a major company to do regular work for them.

I might not be able to get a full time job, so I'm going to have to make this freelance thing work. Anyway, I'll do a writing exercise shortly. Back soon!

Okay, decision made

Thanks to those who chimed in on my last post.

John, no need to start up a collection.

I've decided to not go to BYU's WIFYR (Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers) conference this year. While I'd like to have something ready in time for it, I would need to register now and that costs money I haven't got. What's more, I'm not sure I could have something ready...

Which leads to my next issue.

I do need to be writing fiction regularly in order to get good at it, but it needs to not take away from my day jobs. So I am going to find a time to write every day, for about a half hour.

My first effort will be a chapter book probably, to see if I can do it.

Okay.. so the writing...

Yes, I can still post about my writing, can't I?

First off, it's kind of hard to make the time to do it! I keep feeling like there's a way that I could be managing my time better. Discipline, it seems, does not spring spontaneously from my, or anyone's, forehead.

This is unfortunate.

But I simply have to find a way to get all of my writing going steadily, while at the same time making full-time income. Perhaps I have too many irons in the fire?

In any case, what I have been spending the majority of my time on has been these two main areas:

This is my political blog. I'm trying to do it without left or right bias, but I think I'm failing at that so far... Is it that there's nothing useful being said or done by the left at this point? I find that hard to believe; there are plenty of intelligent, well-meaning and effective people on that side of the aisle.

If you follow the link and look for the ticker at the bottom right, you can see how much we've saved clients. Well over 120 million at this point. It's a real feel-good thing that actually acts as my day job.

Other than that, I'm trying to carve out time to devote to Helium.com.... as I don't want to get lost as they start to take even more flight. That site is going to change the online publishing world as we know it.

I have to run now.. got phone calls to make.

Don't worry, I'm still going to keep at the writing... heavily. I've got stories aching to be told. I just have to learn how to do fiction better.

Up for 39 hours

and not going very strong at this point.

I've been keeping up with the feedback from the client in Korea. I get paid when the project is done, so I have a vested interest in moving the project forward.

I also did work at WeXL today, for the morning time.

We attended a blue and gold banquet tonight for our oldest, Thomas. It was fun; our first.

Tomorrow's plan:
Start my day by exercising.
1) At WeXL in the AM. Prospecting by phone and by going to business parks.
2) Home for lunch probably, or soon thereafter.
3) Bang an article together-- at least the rough draft, for Maximum Yield magazine.
4) Spend time keeping up with the project for my Korean client.
5) Do some Helium administrative stuff.
6) Check out the Ensign, Liahona, and New Era's editorial calendar. Outline an article based on what I find.
7) Add more to my brainstorm for my America essay.
8) Go to the bank.
9) Do a creative writing experiment: characterization.

And that is all. It ain't much, but I'll probably be fighting sleep all day.

Speaking of sleep, that's what I gots to do now. Good night moon.

Finally, the update we've all been waiting for...

I've been somewhat cryptic in my latest status updates on Facebook, and they have basically been alluding to what's been going on in my writing world of late.

Let me start this off by making as clear as possible the pure and undiluted, and really quite distilled, fact that it is 6:40AM here and I have been working at the kitchen table for the last 10 (ten) hours. Not straight, because I get up every hour or so to stretch. And I had to go get some Rockstar.

Am I getting ahead of myself? Can't tell.

Okay. So my client in Korea keeps feeding me lots of work. I could probably work on it full time two to three days per week. But there's so much other stuff to do during the daytime that I end up doing the lion's share of the work at night. So I have just finished something in the realm of 20 hours of work for this client. This is, of course, at my hourly rate of $25.

So that's nice. Tasty in fact. It's a lot of questions and extension activities, but I'm getting pretty good at it and I think it plays right into my strengths as an educator and writer.

I have to say right now that I am extremely grateful for this work. How wonderful it is to do something you love. Sure, this gets a little tiring and tiresome, but it pays and it is essentially what I love to do.

That's not all. I landed another client: it's basically a partner company of WeXL, the company I market for right now--which is another day job. And that day job is going okay, although with the recent goings on, I've had to keep the time I spend on that one to a minimum since it doesn't deal with deadlines so much.

So I wrote a website and sales letter for that new client, am in the process of tweaking that copy as they finalize things, and have already been paid on my invoice. Sweet!

I have a good friend who works with this new client as well, and he passed on the name of a fellow who was looking for a ghost writer to work with him on a large-ish instruction manual. I met with them three weeks ago and it went well. I spent some time with the material needing written up and sent along a sizable (very!) estimate, which is, albeit, negotiable.

Wow, I haven't slept in 24 hours (almost) and I think I just used 'albeit' correctly in a sentence. I'll just soak that up for a second.........................................zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Okay, I'm back. That should be able to be parlayed into good work, and ongoing work with that company as well, since the main client is a marketing company that specializes in web marketing. Funny, I specialize in web copy!

That's not all! HA!

I sold an article on Helium.com's marketplace. Incidentally, if you want to make some extra cash (it starts small but snowballs with diligence and patience) check out:

That article sold for $32. Not terrible. It was about how to make homemade bread.

I cashed out over $100 from Helium.com this last month. That was the result of my large collection of articles on there, about 8 or 10 new articles, and one sold marketplace article. Considering I spent about ten hours over the month on Helium, that's not terrible for a writing website.

Dang, my Pandora's playing U2's Mysterious Ways. I love this one. Actually, it's pretty much my favorite U2 tune.

But that's not all!

I got an e-mail from a publication out of Canada, one that has a print and online version and a readership of over 250,000 (does that mean they have 250,001?). This was the editor of this magazine that e-mailed me. She invited me to contribute regularly to their American offshoot. It's about gardening-- one of my favorite subjects to write about!

But that's not all!

But that IS all I can say right now. When the deal happens or doesn't happen (that's all the detail I can give right now, sorry!) I'll pass it on. But it could be big. I mean... uh... insanely big.

I owe you a huge thanks. Your advice (mostly Melinda and Kristi, but the others' support of this advice) to maybe focus on non-fiction was inspired. I know it. I am not abandoning fiction, but there's something I need to do in the realm of non-fiction. I can feel the shivers of excitement right now.

I'm not kidding. I'm trembling with this right now. Maybe it's partly the Rockstar, maybe it's the lack of sleep. I've simply got a certainty that I'm going the right way at this point. No doubt about it. And as I write that, the HOLY GHOST, who is the teacher and Comforter, confirms this certainty.

Why does so much of society, including me far too much of the time, discount our most important sense? I mean, our physical senses can be deceived so easily. But our other sense: the one many of us call soul, or spirit, or heart, or intuition is actually not so easily deceived. Yet we so easily mistrust it.

That's all for now.

Or not. Actually, the WeXL thing is going well too. It's neat to be marketing something, and beginning to be successful with that something, that actually helps people. I'll actually help a client save over $650,000 in interest alone over the next eight years!

Now that's all. The update I'd been needing to post for a while.

My head's above water now, so I've got to go leap in again. I'll do the bed thing first, though.

Well isn't this a fine howdy-do?

Is that the phrase that I'm looking for? Probably not.

Anyway, no word on The Cabin yet. Of course, I only sent in on Tuesday, so today is only three days later. So yeah, I think maybe a couple weeks will tell. Or maybe a couple months.

And the answer could well be a big fat, N-O. But positive thinking... it'll be yes. Or... "write it better and then we'll talk." Or something like that.

Moving on. I saw a book called The Shack in Barnes and Noble. That sounds like the title of my book. I hope that won't be a problem. Of course, I could change the title of mine if the publisher thinks I ought to, but the cabin really is a central theme to the book. We'll see. Counting chickens and all...

So I've had pretty much no time to work on anything else to do with writing in the last month. This is because teaching at the ELC takes all of my regular work time, and dealing with the after effects of the accident. Those after effects (does that need a hyphen? whatever) have included talking to a lawyer, searching for and buying a new (to us) van, and beginning treatment for some whiplash I didn't even know I had, but which is giving me headaches and a daily, 3PM fever. Weird huh?

Gotta change that. But for now, I'm watching old episodes of Chuck online. It's a harmless, fun show. The John Larroquette cameo is just spectacular.

Veerry late on Tuesday night

and here I am. I just get this momentum and then my character, Josh Kerr, just takes me along for the ride. It's exciting, but my sleeping patterns are all wack.

I started the day at 51,324 words. I am ending my day at 56,338.

I know I said I saw 6-8000 words to go, like last week. But now I am seeing about that number still. So The Cabin will likely hit 65,000 words in its first draft form. That'll happen this week. Tomorrow I'm going to write like a madman.

I feel good about this story. It's one I am loving to tell and I believe others will love to read it.

And on the adding romance front, it's a go. It's difficult, but I think it's going well.

Trading dreams?

I feel bad (no, I don't feel an adverb, so I am not going to write 'badly' there; I feel an adjective, so 'bad' is the correct word) that I haven't been paying as much attention to this blog as my new one. I am finding that http://gruntandsweat.blogspot.com/ is turning into a real joy to maintain. I'm posting literature, videos, poetry, and even recipes there. So today I shared an excerpt from John Adams, a book I have just begun reading. I long for a real statesman (or woman) to step up and seek the presidency.

But then I remember what I heard in The Dark Knight. It seems that in Rome, when the place was in dire need or under attack, they suspended the rule of law and appointed a single person to get them out of their mess. Sure, as Rachel Dawes said, they had some real bad apples there, but it seems an interesting concept.

The other issue being, of course, that if a person seeks power, that automatically should, in most cases, disqualify them from the office they seek.

Anyway, I am going to forgo my sales calls this afternoon and work on The Cabin. So I'm not trading dreams. Sure, my work with ChartedCourse will likely be what enables us to get into an appropriately-sized house, but I am a writer. I have to remember that.
