Just wanted to write up a quick post. Today was good. Blake finally got me the stuff and the instructions I needed in order to finish up the User Manual. Whew. So I thought I would be able to get it done and still have a couple hours in the afternoon to work on The Cabin, but I was wrong, wrong wrong. Proofreading a 176 page document takes a long time. So I was actually working on it until just about 7PM today, with a break for lunch and for dinner and for a scooter ride in the rain.
So I wasn't able to get anything done on the current novel today, but I still have high hopes for next week. If I can do 5000 words each day, I will hit 45,000 words for the book, and I really think that will probably do it. But I am also open to letting the book go where it needs to. I know the climaxes and the important scenes, but the spaces in between can be as big and detailed as they need to be.
So tomorrow I will pick up my first check for my work for ChartedCourse. That's pretty exciting. It won't be very big, but it's a start. I have done almost 40 hours of work for ChartedCourse by now for the month of February, so that'll be a better check, but it's still not paying the bills.
Gonna keep at it. Gonna write a bestseller. Gonna make this work.
This is my re-launched writing blog. Welcome! On this blog you will find posts that report my labors as an author. I write whenever I can make the time- which is usually in the evenings. I love to tell stories and am really excited about my latest project. I am currently publishing my latest novel, chapter-by-chapter on this blog. Stick around, come back often and comment and share and we can form a community of supportive writers.

Taking more shape
The end of Thursday has rolled around and it was better than I expected. The entire day was better, I mean, not just the end.
Right. In any case, here's what I did:
I started my day by reading through some information that Blake asked me to integrate into the User Manual. I spent a couple hours getting through it and taking note of the highlights and some of the details.
By the way, I exercised again this morning and felt strong. It was a great feeling to lift that 130 lb. barbell twelve times, two more than I expected. What a rush. And I usually walk most of the time, with some good jogging thrown in here and there for my cardio and weight loss portion, but my legs didn't want to run. So I mostly just walked for about an hour. I intend to do over an hour tomorrow morning. I am too impatient and I keep hoping that my pants will get loose faster and that my chest will firm up overnight and such.
Being impatient as a weight loser and a writer doesn't really work. So I'm learning patience.
Anyway, by the time I finished going through the info from Blake, it was time to deal with kids. You see, at about noon, Annemarie (my hot wife) feeds the older boys (sometimes the younger two (a girl and a boy) as well) and then heads out to take them to Spanish School. So that leaves me and Lily and Nathaniel. I usually feed them, play with them and then put the toddler, Nathaniel (he's nearly two) down for a nap. Then I goof off sometimes with Lily, or sometimes she takes a nap a little later or sometimes I just make her go play. But I eat lunch usually after the little guy's in bed.
So today, after getting the bald-ish, albino monkeys dealt with, I rewrote the chapter that the information was supposed to go into. Then I let Blake know that I was ready to finish the manual if he could just get me the last bit.
However, I forgot something just now. Actually, while changing Nathaniel's mess before his nap, I had a pretty good idea for a graded reader. So before I wrote up the new chapter for the User Manual, I wrote the outline for this new idea I had. It is tentatively titled The Honeymoon, and it follows a young couple on a hike for part of their honeymoon. She falls down a long drop and breaks her leg badly and he has to rescue her. But he's terrified of heights. Anyway, it's an adventure/romance. So I wrote that outline proposal up and printed it out for Annemarie to look at when she got back.
Then I did the chapter and e-mailed Blake.
Then when Annemarie got back (soon after) I had her look at the outline. She thought it was really cool. So I reworked it a bit and sent it off to the editorial team.
Now, you remember yesterday's post, how I didn't think I would have the time to do much in The Cabin? Well, I made time and got right about 2000 words done. I really like seeing it take a different, more complete shape from the outline I wrote months ago. Mike is a fun character to follow around, and boy howdy, my past is full of rich things to add to the story.
Well, this is long, but it felt like a good day. I worked hard, actually made some money, and hopefully moved toward getting that bestseller I am going to write. Heck, I may be writing that bestseller now! But let it be said that, while I don't know when, I am going to write a bestseller. I know it.

Wednesday: A good day
Back again. Can't stop this. You can't stop this. I'm thinking of Hitch right now. You've seen the movie, yes?
So, yesterday (sorry I didn't post) I had no real time to write. The kids had appointments and I had to take the scooter in to get fixed. Oh well. I did, after much research and work, finally find a couple of places to try sending It's Not Tomato Sauce, my new picture book to. I sent it to Viking Books, to an editor I met a couple years ago. The response time will be at least three months, and possibly never! That's okay. Like I said, you can't stop this.
That's pretty much all I did yesterday.
Today, however, was great. I finally made it in to the Rec Center this morning and exercised for an hour and a half. I really am enjoying it more these days. The pants are a smidgen (merely a trifle) looser, and I am building good muscle. Then I got back and helped my second boy, Hintze, deal with being pukey. He was on the mend by noon, but he had to stay home from Spanish School.
Anyway, I was able to put about five hours into The Cabin, finally and I hope to put more into it tomorrow. I am at a little under 20,000 words, so I got about 6,000 done today, which was actually my goal. Tomorrow I was gonna shoot for the same, but Blake of ChartedCourse finally got back to me with stuff for the finalization of the User Manual. So I'm gonna get that done as fast as I can tomorrow and I hope to still have time to get at least a couple thousand words done. I am really enjoying this process, even more than with Brothers in Arms. I find I am getting to know my characters better, and I am also finding that I need to be more open for them to come alive and surprise me. This book is becoming more autobiographical by the page, and that's fine, but it is bringing up a lot of old feelings.
In any case, I am going to stay on target to get the first draft done by the end of this month. Which means by the end of next week. Friday, February 29th in fact. I think I can do it, even if they contact me again to work on The Mars Betrayal. Initial rumblings, by the way, about the latest outline I submitted, called simply Thief, are good. It would be great if that picked that one up too.
Apparently I qualify to join the National Press Corps, by the way. With all the articles I have on www.helium.com, they are inviting me and others like me to apply. Which makes sense for them, since yearly dues are at least $150 and probably more! Holy smackers! I think I will simply put, "Invited to join National Press Corps" on my resume. That'll be fine.
Anyway, all is well in Zion. Not really, but the writing is settling down finally. I am making the time to be more disciplined and it feels great. I really don't think I will be able to avoid going back to a job by the end of this year, but at least I jump started the writing. This way, hopefully, I will be able to permanently quit and write sooner. It's my dream, I'm gonna live it. I won't sleep my dream.

Finally got stuff going
So I finally got some stuff done today. Here's what I did.
I sent my proposed newsletter content to Blake at ChartedCourse. I got it to 6 pages with no problem, and checked over it multiple times. I like how it turned out. I think it looks more or less pro. I have offered to see it through all the way to printing, so we will see what comes of that.
I did apply to a job at the Friend magazine with my Church. I don't think I will get it, as they have removed the job listing and I never heard anything.
I wrote a final draft of another outline for a Graded Reader and then sent it off to the editorial team. I also argued the case for Lost in the Zoo, but without much hope.
I then spent the last three or four hours of my work day with The Cabin. I did about 4500 words today, about 500 shy of what my goal was. But I also got a bit of a late start on it. Tomorrow I will hit 6000 words for the day. If I can do 5000 words each day, or more, I will be at 40,000 words+ by the end of the week. That will actually see it more or less finished, so that is great.
I plan to write for Helium some tomorrow, but I really need to get after the novel writing, as it is my love and true dream. I am keeping my eyes open for other writing jobs as well and may pursue some shortly.
And that's it for now. We are going through and watching Season 2 of The Office. It is a hilarious show. I might write more, but my computer needs to be shut down, as it is slow. I really need a new laptop, but we don't have the money now. Oh well, hopefully soon. I love writing. It was a delicious struggle to see my character through the hard times so far in The Cabin.
To those reading this, thanks. I really appreciate your support. carpe somnium

The wages of sin are...
Okay, so the title is a little heavy and we won't go there. I am at a free business center here in the Ritz-Carlton at Lake Las Vegas. It's a nice hotel, although a little too ostentatious for my blood. But the business center is free, and that is good.
I am still taking good notes on the conference. This is good because I will need to fill a six page newsletter for ChartedCourse with this material.
I am going to write a bestseller. I am going to do it. I am going to write The Cabin, rewrite and revise and edit like mad, and then sell it. Then it will be a bestseller, I hope. If it isn't, a different one will be, but I am going to write a bestseller.
I am going to now run and see if I can get free wireless in the lobby so that I can use my computer instead of these rather uncomfy PCs.
I am featured on Helium today. So check out www.helium.com and look for the article about educational issues that are important to this presidential election.
That's all for now. Sayonara.

Very fast
Well I am in Lost Wages (Las Vegas) for a conference for ChartedCourse and the USA Wealth Institute. It's interesting, and I am taking lots of notes. I will need to write up my notes for a newsletter that we want to have done by March.
I am also trying to get some more story ideas down for the graded reader series. I had one idea that seemed good, but then got complicated and I wasn't sure it was not too big in scope for the series. I then thought of one based on a funny case that happened with a Utah couple. But it's a little absurd.
Anyway, I am at a business center where I have to pay! for the Internet. Las Vegas is a scam. I have to go. I am going to write a bestseller this year.

Well howdy partners. Sorry, I said that because I just saw a good western movie and was in the mood.
I have written several articles for www.helium.com over the last couple of days. I am wanting to place in a contest there, as well as hit the 800 article mark this week. So tomorrow I hope to do so. Plus, they are still doing their reward-a-thon and every article I write gets extra $$ these days.
I do hope to work on The Cabin this week still, although I am going out of town from tomorrow until Saturday. I will probably do some work on it while I am gone. I don't exactly want to do this trip (it's to a conference that ChartedCourse is doing) but I need to go as the writer for the company so I can report on it.
I actually applied to a job today. It is with my church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am not sure I will even get a call on it, but I felt an impression that I ought to check their employment website and so I did. I immediately found an opening for Assistant Editor for one of the church magazines, called The Friend. So I applied and tried hard to really accentuate my abilities as a writer. Even if this job doesn't happen, I will still probably need to try to get employment in the next five or six months. Money is running low and we can't really afford insurance.
But I will still fight for the dream and I hope to get The Cabin done as soon as possible. Sometimes I feel like I am pinning a lot of my hopes on this book. I think that's because I have a feeling that it can be really good, as long as I get after it and work hard on it. But I really need to work at it. Helium is a great place, but it's not paying the bills.
This is one reason that I am going to the conference. I hope to learn some things about real estate investing that I can use. We plan to kill our portfolio and use that $$ for investment in real estate. The stock market is bleeding badly and I just can't see keeping our shares when it's such a good time to get into property. Yep, it is a buyer's market right now, although some might argue that.
My, these posts sure do wander sometimes.
Here're a couple articles I have done for Helium that I am happy with:

http://www.helium.com/tm/841753/movie-amadeus-teenaged-wolfgang
http://www.helium.com/tm/841350/bottled-water-trend-consumers
I hope you enjoy them. I got a comment from somebody who is actually reading this blog. That's very nice and thank you! Anybody else who wants to comment can feel free!

Get a load of these:
Hey there, hi there and ho there. I'll be back later tonight to post what I've done today, but I wanted to get these here.
I’ve got some pretty interesting writing gigs here. These are competitive opportunities, so you have to write your best and thus increase your chances of having your article selected. This is actually more efficient than just writing an article or story and sending it off blindly to a publisher or magazine. These are titles that publishers want articles on. So do your best and you might make cash. I’ve had four articles picked up and published through this system.
1. Irreverent Downloadable Game Site needs 400-500 word reviews for online video games:
Darkside Arklight 2, Spandex Force, Caribbean Hideaway, Bloodties, Turbo Subs, and King Mania.
Original reviews must include a rating out of 5 and commentary on game play, graphics, creativity, innovation and sound.
Free trials are available. Reviews are needed by 02/05/2008. Earn $20 per selected review.

2. A Boston newspaper needs a 350 word article on the best spots to find pet treats in and around Boston. Focus on the top four spots in Boston to buy interesting and unique pet treats. Cover these topics: top-selling items, price range, and location. Selected articles pay $24 if submitted by 2/15.

3. A Boston newspaper needs a 350 word home buyer’s guide for first-time buyers in Boston. The guide should include quotes from a Boston-based realtor; tips to those who currently live in apartments/condos and want to buy their first home; dealing with the high cost of living in Boston; and what are some red flags to look out for. Submit by 02/15 and selected articles will earn $16.
