I wrote a review of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? for a contest on www.helium.com.

The date stamp says the 4th, but for me it's the 3rd still.
It's mighty late; nearly 2AM. I just couldn't stop until now. That's kinda cool.
Here's what I did.
Helium.com
I wrote one poem for the contest, three articles for the Marketplace, and four articles for general consumption. Yes, that makes eight! I wrote eight articles for Helium today! Wild, eh?
Here's a link to the poem. It's a little sweet:
http://www.helium.com/items/970795-quicksandso-strolling-alongminding-businesson
I can't link to the articles I wrote for the Marketplace, but I can describe them. They are for an entertainment site and they are quizzes. But not academic quizzes. They're on whether you should be a hitman, or what goddess you might be. The reason I can't link to them is because they're not actually Helium's. They are the sole property of the publisher, even if they don't use them. That's fine. I imagine at least one will get picked up. I'll do more tomorrow.
Here are the four articles. They're on various topics and are mildly entertaining and mostly informative:
http://www.helium.com/items/971591-remember-pennsylvania-years-thought
http://www.helium.com/items/971562-friends-supposed-conscious-about
http://www.helium.com/items/970966-preparing-gardening-tools-season
http://www.helium.com/items/970933-purpose-there-after-death
So there you have them. I rated a little bit and intend to do a goodly amount tomorrow. Gotta keep those stars.
As for the contests, I am beginning to place in the poetry contest and am finally in contention for the top six (and sometimes the top three) in the other one. I really had better win something. I was trying to win it all, but I don't think there's much hope of that.
The Cabin
Anyway, as you can imagine, my day was pretty taken up by Helium. Plus I had to go out and buy our new front door, which I will pick up tomorrow. Hopefully it can be installed early next week.
But I finally got to The Cabin after Annemarie and I got back from going out to eat. Yes, we got a baby-sitter. Yes, we went to Asuka. Of course it was good.
I figured I'd do maybe a thousand, maybe 1500 words tonight. But I couldn't stop. I wanted to keep going. So I did 3300. We are cooking right along. If I actually get this to 50000 words, I will be pleased. I'm not trying to pad it, mind you, but the character keeps wanting to do other stuff. That's fine, too. I am at just under 37,000 words right now.
Neat-o.
Anyway, I really have to hit the sack. Still gonna be a bestselling author, no matter how much I have to learn.

Thursday night... she's home!
Back again. Tonight we went and picked up Annemarie from the airport. She had a good trip it sounds like.
My writing report:
I have written two articles today, maybe one yesterday, for http://www.helium.com/ That's all! I've also rated a bit, which is a good thing. I was not a chosen winner in the Pulitzer Center's Citizen Journalism contest, which is lame, but the author who won deserved it. Her writing was flat, but she had some impressive inside perspective that was useful.
But I am in the top 3 of the contests I was fighting in last week. It should be finalized tomorrow, and right now I am only two points off the leader. One of my articles is not being rated very kindly, which is odd, because it is quite good.
I am going for the win in another contest this week as well, so wish me luck.
For tomorrow I plan on writing for Helium after the dentist (yes, one more time... sheesh) and then rating for a bit. Thereafter I shall work on The Cabin. Finally! I am not so sure I'll get it done this month.. okay, probably not, but I am going to get it done in the next couple of weeks. All of these plans are contingent on whether I hear back from the editorial team about The Mars Betrayal. So we will see.
Also, I got a call from the company I interviewed with last week. I had a feeling about what they were going to say. They didn't offer me the job. Surprising, but not, if you know what I mean. That's okay. I actually have been invited to an interview for a Teaching Fellows job in Austin, so that's interesting. I accepted, but it is on April 26th, so we will see what happens before then.
I just really need to work hard on my fiction. I have to learn this art and I have to do it well.
That's my writing report. Here's the etcetera:
For the last few days, I've not been getting enough sleep, which has translated into my being quite tired. I've also been refurbishing the lower level of our kitchen cupboards. They looked old and run down, so I sanded them, painted them a satin, ashy black and then reinforced the hinges. They look totally brand new and they actually look really good. I really wanted to get this done while Annemarie was gone so I could surprise her with it.
So when she got back tonight, she was surprised and very pleased. She, like me, loves the color and thinks they look amazing. Oh, I also rebuilt a corner which had been a problem. I think it looks almost pro, which sort of surprises me as I had to do it with a skilsaw (handheld jittery thing), a hand saw, my pocket knife, and no clamps or straight edges. Nor am I good at detail work. But this task was clearly blessed! It looks really good and very nicely finished.
We just watched August Rush, which is now one of my all-time favorite movies. Guess who's not a cynic? Yes, I am an unabashed sap. Annemarie hadn't seen it before, and I was anxious (dumb eh) to see what she would think. She liked it as much as I did. For many of the same reasons. It's pretty silly how self-conscious I am about how much I love that flick.
Anyway, it's late and my dentist appointment is early. I must to bed.
I'm gonna write a bestseller.

Just stopping in quickly on this Tuesday evening...
to record my day. And yesterday.
For writing, I have basically been fighting on Helium to finally win a category. I have written my very best to this category, and so far it is okay. I truly feel like my stuff is the best in its titles. I would really like to place first, overall first, in one of these contests for once. So this is the week I am going for it.
Anyway, today we took Annemarie to the airport so she could fly to California (LA) to see a friend of hers. This is actually the first time Annemarie's been away from the the kids and me for any more than most of a day. So it should be very fun for her, and may involved tears from kids, but it will certainly cause no harm in anyone. I miss her, for sure, but I have been kept busy with the kids and other work.
I sent some writing samples to Nature's Sunshine yesterday, as I had applied to a part time job there. I could use the extra work, particularly if they allow telecommuting. I also got an e-mail from Lena at Mountain Reservations, (where I interviewed last Wednesday) telling me that they would not be doing second interviews and that they would send word by 5PM tomorrow. So I am actually kind of anxious now. I know that I would love that job. I know that I would not love the commute. But the work looks awesome, as do the people, and the money is vital. So if they offer me the job, at a good salary, I will take it. For sure.
I also, finally, got my first advance payment today from Cengage Learning, the ones publishing the graded reader series. Wahoo! It was a spectacular feeling. Seriously, I got kind of weepy. What a wonderful thing to get paid pretty well for doing what you have dreamed of doing all of your life! I am still so excited that I might even make a typo!
But it's late and I have much to do around the house. I love my job; I love my family; I love my life. Ain't it sickening?

End of Tuesday, February 5th, 2008
Well howdy partners. Sorry, I said that because I just saw a good western movie and was in the mood.
I have written several articles for www.helium.com over the last couple of days. I am wanting to place in a contest there, as well as hit the 800 article mark this week. So tomorrow I hope to do so. Plus, they are still doing their reward-a-thon and every article I write gets extra $$ these days.
I do hope to work on The Cabin this week still, although I am going out of town from tomorrow until Saturday. I will probably do some work on it while I am gone. I don't exactly want to do this trip (it's to a conference that ChartedCourse is doing) but I need to go as the writer for the company so I can report on it.
I actually applied to a job today. It is with my church: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am not sure I will even get a call on it, but I felt an impression that I ought to check their employment website and so I did. I immediately found an opening for Assistant Editor for one of the church magazines, called The Friend. So I applied and tried hard to really accentuate my abilities as a writer. Even if this job doesn't happen, I will still probably need to try to get employment in the next five or six months. Money is running low and we can't really afford insurance.
But I will still fight for the dream and I hope to get The Cabin done as soon as possible. Sometimes I feel like I am pinning a lot of my hopes on this book. I think that's because I have a feeling that it can be really good, as long as I get after it and work hard on it. But I really need to work at it. Helium is a great place, but it's not paying the bills.
This is one reason that I am going to the conference. I hope to learn some things about real estate investing that I can use. We plan to kill our portfolio and use that $$ for investment in real estate. The stock market is bleeding badly and I just can't see keeping our shares when it's such a good time to get into property. Yep, it is a buyer's market right now, although some might argue that.
My, these posts sure do wander sometimes.
Here're a couple articles I have done for Helium that I am happy with:

http://www.helium.com/tm/841753/movie-amadeus-teenaged-wolfgang

I hope you enjoy them. I got a comment from somebody who is actually reading this blog. That's very nice and thank you! Anybody else who wants to comment can feel free!

Monday, November 5th, 2007: Many articles written
Well, I pretty much spent the day on Helium.
Let's recap what got done last week. I rewrote chapter 2 of the User Manual for Charted Course. I did a preliminary, pretty good revision of my Mars Betrayal proposal. I placed in contests on Helium to win $25.
Today I wrote probably ten to fifteen articles on Helium. Some required research, but most of them are ones that I could do from my own experience and knowledge. Here are links to a few:
http://www.helium.com/tm/684970/didnt-coffins-needed-nails
http://www.helium.com/tm/684432/hooray-another-those-leapt
http://www.helium.com/tm/685009/during-months-taiwan-teaching
Anyway, here is what I will do tomorrow:
I will start my day by getting my scooter's wheels balanced and looking into med insurance. While waiting for things, I will finalize the Mars Betrayal proposal.
I will then write 1000 words for The Cabin, my NaNoWriMo project.
Then I will do Chapter three of the User Manual. I will finish it. If I finish it in time, I will do some more articles on Helium. If I feel up to it after my meetings tomorrow night, I will do some more work on The Cabin.
This is the first week of my NaNoWriMo project. I have exactly four weeks. I must get at least fifteen thousand words done each week. So I will do so somehow!
So that's tomorrow. I really enjoy being my own boss. I like having steady work that has the potential to actually pay out in the near future. I feel really good about the new version of the Mars Betrayal.
The kids are all getting hit with a nose and cough virus. So far nothing serious. Prayers, sleep and echinacea are all wonderful, in that order.
Speaking of sleep, I am outta here.
Novel recommendations:
The Riddlemaster of Hed by Patricia A. McKillip This is a marvelous trilogy that is written in some of the best narrative prose I have ever read.
