Tuesday, October 30: It is waaay too late

I need to get this down fast, then go to bed.

I am putting off the Mars Betrayal until probably Friday. I have not found places to send my picture book yet, but I will tomorrow I hope.

Today I wrote a massive pile of stuff for Helium, in the hopes of getting some good placing on the College Writing Contest and the one day Halloween writing contest. I am now at about 725 articles over there.

Whew.

I intend to start NaNoWriMo next week, which will begin on the 5th of November.

I will get chapter 2 of the Charted Course manual done this week.

Now I gotta go. Hoping I get some $$ from contests this week. I cashed out today on Helium and requested about eighty bucks. Not too bad...

Monday morning, October 29, 2007: Here's the plan

Well I just wanted to get on here and map out my week really fast. First off, this weekend was great! I got tons of yard and garden work done, and my gardens are pretty much put to bed.
Church was spectacular, as always.

Today I am pretty much going to focus on www.helium.com. Why? Because I want to get more $$ and recognition in contests. So I will start this day by outlining at least six stories, but I would like to do as many as ten. Then I will write the stories, offline to start with, and later submit them.

I will then get to it on the College Writing Contest, which is the bigger $$ contest and the one that might pay off even more in several weeks.

So that's today.

Tomorrow I am going to take my scooter in for repairs. I think that while I wait will be a good time to work on finishing my revised Mars Betrayal proposal. So let's say that Tuesday is Mars Betrayal day. I will also get my picture book manuscript sent off on Tuesday. It looks like I need to be at ChartedCourse at 7PM that evening as well. Late Tuesday will be more Helium time.

Wednesday I am going to try to do a total rewrite of Chapter 2 in the ChartedCourse user manual. T

Then starting on Thursday is NaNoWriMo. (National Novel Writing Month) I am going to try and do 5000 words each day that I work on The Cabin. I need to work on it at least ten days of November, so Thursday will be day one. If I get behind, I will re-work that plan.

Friday is going to be more short story day, as well as Helium day. I need to get a top notch, best I can do short story going for submission to Writers of the Future. Honorable mention is only the beginning!

That's the plan. I will report later today on how today went.

I gotta say that this journal/chronicle/blog is helping me stay focused. I feel more jazzed about writing each day that I watch my progress and record it here. I love writing. I love it. I have got to become a better writer.

On a final note, a famous author once said that you can only become a good author after you have written a million words. I did a rough estimation and found that I am between 500,000 and 600,000... probably. I can see where I might be more than that from all my journaling and poetry and such. So I am not at a million. That's fine, I will be soon.

Friday, October 26: Big wheels keep on turning

My back is sore from all this sitting!

Let's get this over with so I can get to the juicy stuff. I reached, as any readers know, my goal for submissions to Associated Content. I also finished an initial rewrite of the User Manual for ChartedCourse.

Today I worked hard on revising my Mars Betrayal proposal. I read the publisher's comments several times and then made the changes in my four page synopsis. I find it really hard to spot plot holes in my story lines. However, I am really liking the idea of making an outline and even a detailed synopsis for any book I do. I did this for The Cabin, a book I hope to get to sometime in November.. wait.. more on that later.

I actually think I will go ahead and outline all my stories too. It helps me get the big picture. I believe my best stories have been written from outlines.

So the Mars Betrayal proposal now just needs a new first chapter. This is a book for English learners, so I need to try and keep the language simpler, too. This is challenging, but I think I can convincingly argue with this editorial team that we can't dumb it down too much, because that will hurt the authenticity.

So I did everything I set out to do, except I have not found publishers to send my picture book manuscript to. It is too late to do that today. I will do that first thing on Monday, then I will work on the Mars Betrayal proposal again. Then I will do short stories like mad. I might change that around.. anyway. Let's leave that for next week!

Now for juicy stuff. November is National Novel Writing Month. I will call it NaNoWriMo from now on. I am going to do it this time, and I am going to write The Cabin. I will chronicle my goals and whether I hit them here on this journal. I challenge anybody reading this who feels they have a novel in them to join me this month!

The other tasty item is that a friend of mine who I have known most of my life e-mailed me yesterday saying that her company needs a temporary writer to fill in for a lady going on maternity leave. This would be from January to March. I am interested, but the pay would have to be great, because I would have to commute every day for about an hour each way. So I sent my resume. Hmm.. no stress marks on that word. Oh well!

And if anybody (all three of you...) who is reading this wants to do some site exchange stuff to increase traffic, go ahead and click on the icon to the right of my photo at the top. No charge to you, more of a networking thing is all.

I feel good about this productive week. Next week will be more so, and I will try to find a new seat that will support the back better, because.. woof. When I got up today my rear-end hurt and my back was all tight. So that's all for now.

Thursday, October 25: Goals and this journal save the day

Well. Today was spectacularly productive. I have to say that it really has helped me to stay on target (think of Star Wars "Stay on target," "Almost there!" "Stay on target!" "It's away!" "Did it go in?" "No! Just impacted on the surface." I digress...). Anyway, setting out what my plan for the week was has really made a difference. Here's what I did.

I started by completing and passing my goal for submissions to Associated Content. I actually did the ten by getting articles from Helium to my Content Producer page over there. Then, I thought I would try to get some real hits by writing something timely and interesting, so I wrote an article about 30 Days of Night and why it is the one horror movie to rule them all, one horror movie to bind them. Then I put that article on Helium too.

Unfortunately a music review and movie review I had submitted to Associated Content on Monday were declined today. Oh well.

So, after that, I went to work on Chapter One of Charted Course's User Manual. Incidentally, if you are in the Salt Lake City or Provo, Utah area or even Boise, Idaho, you should go to www.gochartedcourse.com and check it out.

I finished my first rewrite and expansion of this chapter! It took me about five hours of steady work, but I got it done.

So there are two different goals for this week done!

Now, I also found out where I placed on the bigger Helium contest; I placed third! Wahoo! It ain't first, but it's money and satisfaction in my pocket.

Finally, tonight, I wrote one short story for the new Fat and Happy Contest on Helium. Here are links to the things I wrote today for Helium:

http://www.helium.com/tm/665785/autumn-roared-through-mountain
http://www.helium.com/tm/663987/millions-dollars-versions-something

The second one is the article about 30 Days of Night. It is in the wrong category, but the link should work for a day or two until it is worked out. When it is fixed, I will post the new link.

Now, I have to get bed soon (not too late tonight! Woohoo!) but I want to mention that I did not intend to write a story tonight. But I also knew that I needed to practice and I needed to do some creative writing today and every day. So I pushed it out and got it done. It turned out okay, and more importantly, was good practice and an important exercise in discipline. The story is familiar, I think, with some original twists. It actually feels like the beginning of a book, to tell you the truth. But it would need more work to become more original and not an Eragon clone. That book was marginally entertaining, but painfully unoriginal. It is what I might have written when I was seventeen and it really did not deserve publishing. Wait, Paolini was eighteen, wasn't he? And don't his parents own a small publishing imprint?

Anyway, I am going to start recommending books that have been huge influences on my writing.

Recommendation one is the David Eddings series called the Belgariad. Five books of crisp storytelling. Love it.

October 24, 2007: Wednesday (and what a Wednesday!)

Well, all did not go according to plan today.

I am sticking fairly well to my schedule and thus am getting a lot more done now. However, I am still having trouble getting to bed on time, hence, the time stamp on this.

I was going to try to get Chapter 1 of the User Manual done today, but I was legitimately derailed. Here's why. I went into the ChartedCourse office to meet with the boss-man and get a quick version of Course 2 taught to me. You see, I need to see all the courses if I am going to do a thorough job on this manual. Anyway, I was a couple minutes late and walked into Blake's office.

He looked at me, visibly remembered why I was there and had me take a seat. Then he told me that we needed to do something else. The long and the short of it is that ChartedCourse is going to be a host/sponsor for our local university's women's basketball team. We will thus be hosting the radio broadcast of the game and we are also looking into some other things to do during the game, such as "The Charted Course Shot of the Game" and so on. As part of this, we can have a few thirty second radio advertisements played during the broadcast... for free!

So Blake tells me he wants me in on the meeting they are about to have with a marketing consultant. I run home and get my laptop so I can be ready for the meeting. We discussed target, and they actually deferred to me on that a little bit, since I have been a big supporter of this team for two years. Then, when all had been said that needed to be said, I ended up with the job of writing the scripts for the radio spots. Thirty seconds each! We decided on two different ones.

So I wrote three and played with them the rest of the afternoon and early evening, trying to get them just right and the perfect length. It is an almost certainty that I will hear these ads next week! Ads I wrote! I love it.

Anyway, that sucked up my writing time for the afternoon.

As for Helium, I placed fifth in the slightly lower $$ contest. Blech. After spending three days in the top three, that was disappointing in the extreme. But I got $5. Wahoo.

The other contest is still being rated and judged. I am still in the top three, but that might not last.

I am having trouble finding topics to write about in Helium's Marketplace, but I am pretty sure I will just choose some cinema topics and do some research.

Tomorrow will have to be the day I do Chapter 1 in the ChartedCourse manual. I might take a break once or twice to zip out a story or article for Helium.

I have now submitted 8 of the 10 articles I committed to do for Associated Content this week.

Friday is still Mars Betrayal day.

And Saturday will be yard work and story day and night.

Motivation is back, by the way. In case you hadn't noticed. I love what I do and now I want to love the success I can enjoy from what I do. Must keep at it.

Woo! This is long. One final thing. It appears I have some people following this. How kind of you! Feel free to comment or invite others to read. I would love to be able to chat with you and if my story helps, even better. So... welcome, all.

Tuesday, October 23: Semi-productive

Well, the contest on Helium is getting rough. Some guy just appeared out of nowhere to knock me off the top spot on the smaller contest.

Anyway, I am going to win some money, but it ain't over yet.. I will report on my placement soon.

The new contests are beginning, however, and one of the categories is Creative Writing: Short Stories. Then there are a bunch of story topics. I am going to write as many as I can, but I am going to try to do them in the fantasy and science fiction genres.. "Why?" you may ask...

Because I got word from Writers of the Future about Song of the Wind. It got honorable mention, and that is all. Blech. I will say it now and only once. Damn it. I need to do better. I feel like I can.. but man it is hard to do it. Anyway, I hope to practice at length with this contest that is starting now.

So today I did Helium stuff and did some research.
I also submitted five of the ten articles that I committed to for this week to Associated Content.
I contacted Nancy Wilson, the editor of the UHEA online magazine and sent her links to articles she can use in her mag.

Tomorrow I will rewrite chapter 1 of the user manual for ChartedCourse. Hopefully Blake (CEO and founder) will get back to me with his notes on the web content soon, so that I can square that away fast.

Thursday is Helium contest day. I hope to write at least fives stories that day.

Friday is Mars Betrayal day.

I was a little unmotivated today after I got that response from Writers of the Future. I mean that I think I am a good writer, but am I good enough to have real, solid success? I am not sure. I want to publish my stories more than I want to be a freelance technical writer and journalist, but the latter two seem to have the potential for more reliable income right now. So now I need to simply set up priorities and make time to do my creative writing.

Gonna pray hard tonight and remember to pray over my flocks and fields. In other words, I need to do my best with an eye to God magnifying me.

Long post, but glad it is off my chest.

October 22, Monday: Getting going

Man am I peeved. I thought when I downloaded an update of Norton Anti-virus and Internet Security it would fix some of the problems I have been having with speed on my laptop.

Not in the least bit! I am virus-free, but my computer is slower than ever. It does not seem to be able to handle two browser windows open at all. This is ridiculous.

Why am I peeved just now? Because I have to re-write the post I composed which did not make it onto the blog... due to my crummy computator.

Here goes again...

Today was pretty good as I began to implement the schedule I worked up on Sunday. Basically I have outlined the times when I will write and set down when I will be in bed and when I will be up. Depending on whether Annemarie translates during a given week, I will be able to write from 22 to about thirty hours per week.

Here's what I did today:

I wrote and rewrote extensively for Helium in order to finish strong in two contests. I am currently #1 in the college contest and am in the top five for the other. The positions can and probably will change before all is said and done, but I really really really hope I stay near the top if not at the top!

I met with the CEO/Founder of ChartedCourse and we have outlined a little bit of what I will be doing for them in the coming weeks.

Here's what I must do this week:
Finish rewriting chapter 1 of the ChartedCourse User Manual.
Finish or nearly finish my revision of the Mars Betrayal proposal.
Submit at least ten more articles to Associated Content. By the way, they don't really like op-ed pieces. Keep that in mind.
Choose two or three publishers to send my recent picture book story to. Then send it.

This is my dream and I must work hard to fulfill it. Still no word back from Inscape, and no news from Writers of the Future. But that is fine. These things take time. I am going to make this happen. With my effort and God's help, this can be done.

Here are some articles I recommend:

Saturday, October 20th: I got some stuff done!

Today, what time I put into writing I devoted to Helium. I re-worked one article there and wrote a few others. I am trying hard to put some extra original thought into the lead off of my articles and their content. I want to get deeper and more engaging as I go, so that I can win some Marketplace titles. Marketplace is a thing on Helium where you write to a title that a publisher has 'seeded' on Helium. When the deadline for that title is passed, the publisher chooses one article from those that were written to the seeded title and publishes the chosen article. They pay pretty okay, as well.

So I am trying hard to write better stuff and get Marketplace and contest income soon.

I have 706 articles and am still in a good fight in two contests. Gonna keep it up. Monday I will present my new schedule.

Friday, October 19th (late!) frustrating...

So I was supposed to have the resubmission of the Mars Betrayal ready, but circumstances and translation have kind of gotten in the way. Next week for sure.

I am fighting hard to win or place very high in a couple of contests on www.helium.com

I have passed 700 articles there, which is quite cool. My next goal, of course, is to make it to 800.

I am planning on making a daily schedule this weekend in order for me to be able to get the work done that I need to. Anyway, here are a few articles that I have written recently that I am particularly proud of:

http://www.helium.com/tm/655546/health-campaign-finance-reform
http://www.helium.com/tm/653952/generations-title-person-something
http://www.helium.com/tm/650791/today-leaves-children-spent

Anyway, there you go. Not that anybody is actually reading this. But I need to keep it up.

Until next time.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

A week later... October 16th, Tuesday (late at night)

Don't worry, I haven't given up on writing. Here's what I've done since last time:

I am in fifth or sixth for a contest on Helium.com
I was featured on helium.com's homepage, as I expected, last Thursday.
I have written about eight or nine articles on Helium in the last week.

I have also written draft one of some web content for the company I am working for. The website is www.gochartedcourse.com and pretty much all the text you will see there in about three weeks is written by me!

I have also been proofreading and editing their user's manual.

I wrote a short children's picture book yesterday.

And that's all. I should have done more. Tomorrow I am planning on finishing or nearly finishing the revision of my Mars Betrayal proposal. I will get it sent off by the end of the week.

I still need to re-write Brothers in Arms and get it back out there. I need to be working like mad on all these things.

I am considering trying my hand at a suspense story.

Oh! Inscape, the student-run BYU creative writing magazine has asked me to send them Song of the Wind. I have done so, along with another story I wrote called The Order of the Reel.

I am still mulling over the idea for The Midnight Runners' Club.

And that is all for now. I will be back sooner than a week, really.

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Woops! Two weeks lag! Today is October 9th.

Well, that was a long lag. But nobody's reading this, so I have nobody to apologize to but myself.

Sorry, me.

Okay. Here's what I have been doing:

I finished the lawn articles project and immediately put some of the knowledge I gained through research into action! I did a major landscape overhaul on the front yard. It took me about four full days of work.

Also, I went to see a company about getting involved to make some $$. Instead of becoming a very part time rep, I have been hired as their staff writer! Wahoo! I am familiarizing myself with their system now and will be writing shortly!

I still need to revise my Mars Betrayal proposal.

I had an idea for a story called The Midnight Runners' Club.

And I am hard at work on Helium.com. I expect to be featured on Thursday.

So I need to get to bed, but that is my writing update. We also had General Conference this weekend, and that was an amazing and powerful spiritual experience.
